Forfeiting Dependent Care / Flex spending amount?

Looks like I have a bit of a problem. I have about 1000 left out of $5000 in my dependent care account for 2007. The last day to claim was apparently March 15, per my health insurance company. As the day care closed late last year, I had trouble getting a statement from them for the fees paid in 2007. Can I argue the case with them or am I SOL? Is this an IRS edict or is there a wiggle room here? I thought the IRS grace period of 2.5 months was for incurring the expense and not also for submitting the claims…I had mistakenly umed the last day for submissions as March 30. Any suggestions would be welcome.
