What kinda of nocturnal animal makes a weird screeching noise. I live in upstate NY ?

I went out side to my car about 2 am, and heard a really wired screeching noise, i couldn't see what ever it was making this noise but it was getting closer so i took off lol. So im uming it's nocturnal and just wondering what kind of animal makes this noise in NY.
