Why would an engine not start?

I have a 4 cylinder. The starter engages and turns over, but it won't start. I changed the spark plugs (not sure if the gap is right). I'm in Minnesota, and the car wasn't started for a few days, but the gas here has an additive that should prevent fuel line freezing. I thought maybe to clean the leads on the battery. Any ideas what else it could be?
