No cd or dvd burner detected?

Windows Media Player 10 no longer detects a CD or DVD burner. It still plays and rips DVDs and CDs but it cant burn them. I installed Magix Music Maker 11 but have subsequently uninstalled it upon learning it can create this problem. I now need to know who to reverse the damage without having to use restore points because a lot has changed in my system that I don't wish to lose since the error first occurred (for the 1st time in 2 years my laptop is working error free, except this one!)
